Guest post by Stacy O'neal - 'My little secret time saver'

(First day hair...sleek and smooth)

I often have clients ask me how I style my hair. I have a pretty basic routine and the only real secret is that I make my shampoo last for three days. I, like so many other women, find myself without a lot of time to spend on my hair and extending the time in between my shampoos is a huge time saver.
(1st day look)

I spend the most time on day one, but it is so worth it for days two and three. After shampooing and towel drying my hair I apply a dime-size amount of the Morroccan Oil. Then after my hair is about 60% dry (either by air dry or blow dry) I blowdry my hair with a medium size round brush in sections until my blowdry is complete. I like to touch up the ends with a flat iron and then apply Euphora's Piece Works Defining Paste for separation and hold. First day look is a smooth and sleek style.
(1st day look)

Second day hair is my favorite! I can either continue the sleek and smooth look or bring out my 1-inch to 1 and 1/4 inch curling iron and take vertical sections and curl all the way around my head. I like to finish this look with Kenra's Super Hold Finishing Spray 25. Second day look is modern take of the 70's angel style.
(2nd day look)

Third day hair is the easiest of all. Curling the hair the day before sets the hair up beautifully for a quick swept up do or a ponytail! Here's a great trick I learned on TV, section from ear to ear and pony tail it, high or low - you choose - Then take the sides and pull back each one, wrapping it around your pony to cover the band! A real sexy Hollywood pony!(3rd day look, a sleek pony or a creative version of a bun or chignon)

If you need any help with any of these, stop in to Bijou Salon, ask for me, I'll be sure to give you a quick lesson in person!!

Are we a salon of distinction?

So I have a couple of things in the works here, plus plenty on my mind...and since I never seem to get good quality sleep, I will let them out here. Beware, I may ramble, although this is a business blog per se, it is most certainly me behind the business and the gift of gab runs through my veins heartily!

So Thursday we have a big photo shoot. So (I may have mentioned this already here) there is a really special contest held every year in one of our trade magazines, it's my favorite one (and always has been, even when I was not an owner) because it's mostly about the business side of the salon. They have a wealth of knowledge and I scour the pages and check the internet site often their sister magazine is Modern Salon, the first trade magazine I picked up before becoming a stylist, I remember reading it at my hairdressers, thinking I was let in on some huge secret world, it's a really great magazine. (I warned you I would babble) Okay so back to the point..

On Wednesday night, I will go to the Laura's list event, (wouldn't miss it!) and then I will tuck my kids in and head back to the shop. What on earth would I be doing after 10pm at the shop? Well, you know how in Magazines, whether it be architectural magazines, decor magazines..anything like that, and you look at the pictures, you see nothing? If you're like me, you are jealous at the uncluttered look. The last time I entered this contest (I entered the first year I opened) I never knew...all the crap...yep, it's in the hallway, basement or outside the door..or what may be in our case, all three of those! On Thursday before noon strikes, we will be "staging" the salon to take 10 pictures. (check out here, here, here and here to see how other winners photos looked) I'm stressing over these pictures, because I have no idea what to shoot, but luckily I have friends to help me. Thanks God for my friends!

So have I mentioned the part about this contest that is the real stressful part? Not only stressful for me, but for the guy taking the shots? The deadline when everything needs to be postmarked, is February 1st. We are taking the pictures on January 28th, that leaves him 3 days to do his "magic" on them. When I took the leap to do this contest again, it was because I didn't want to have regrets, I wanted to right away jump head first, like last time. BUT I was hesitant, because last time I just got a letter saying, thank you for entering.

Last time I thought I could have a chance, but actually after looking over who won, I realized, I was so silly to think that. (This time, I have my game face one;)

Still though, I look over and over the previous winners, AND the salons of distinction, I focus alot on how much investment they put into their salon and I freeze...maybe I should not do this. Look closely, the minimum investment I think is still over 100k. Trust me, I am no where near that investment amount, I mean really, not that I wouldn't love to have shopped even more, but it wasn't going to happen! I (think) am intelligent enough to know that I do have some things the competition doesn't seem to have..such as, maybe it's a good thing that my budget (especially in these times) was conservative, maybe not everyone else had the luck of wonderful friends to join in and help, maybe nobody else will have our whimsical look....maybe, just maybe, we'll stand out, just a little bit.

So that is it, that is why I am up at 5am, tossing and turning..I'm nervous, of what, I'm not quite sure, it's not that I worry I won't win, I don't really expect to win the top titles, but maybe a salon of distinction award.. I worry about what the judges will say..I worry about making so much work for everyone...taking apart the salon and putting it back together, inconveniencing some clients, and taking time away from my friend who is once again helping me direct this shoot. (Thanks Shelly) (OOH Kay, click on that link and then sign up for her blog, you will love hers too! Hi Kay:) I worry, I worry, I worry. So I guess, maybe I could get some sleep, IF everyone who reads this, will say a little tiny wish for me. (save actual prayers for more important things:) And hopefully now my brain will have that much less worry, (ha!) so that I can actually fall back asleep, and last night I was actually so proud of myself because I got to bed before 11pm. Sheesh!

So just one more little thing, I'm also really excited because in the next couple of weeks, we will have some "guest" bloggers, I had the idea that rather than always just hearing my "voice" you should, could and would hear other Bijou team members voices. The first ones coming up are Stacy O'neal, her post will be about her three day hair (intriguing I know..that's the point;) and Sierra is working on her Moroccan oil masterpiece!

Don't forget...it's finally here!!

    TRUTH SERUM

I am sitting here looking at this ad for Eufora, and thinking...wouldn't we all LOVE a little truth serum!? How simple life would be, if we had truth serum..Or would it?!

Although Eufora can offer a lot, truth serum is not one of the things it can really give you. BEAUTIFYING SERUM, now that, they can give you!!

    Beautifying SerumTM
~a treatment oil for hair, skin and scalp.
    Beautifying SerumTM
~ is a fast absorbing, light weight oil blend that immediately improves the health and appearance of hair, skin and scalp. Enjoy the moisturizing, conditioning and antioxidant benefits of kukui, neem, argan and cranberry oils.

    UNIQUE FEATURES AND BENEFITS FOR:
Hair: Beautifying SerumTM instantly changes the texture of hair leaving it feeling silky smooth. Locks-in moisture without adding weight, creating beautiful shine and vibrant color while improving the appearance of split ends. Consistent use improves the overall health of the hair.

Skin: Improves skin's appearance and alleviates irritations caused by skin conditions. Vitamins, minerals and other nutrients penetrate deeply and absorb quickly to relieve dry, itchy skin. Prevents moisture loss and leaves skin feeling soft and silky while protecting from harsh environmental stressors.

Scalp: Moisturizes and soothes dry, itchy scalp while working to unclog pores, remove excess sebum and stimulate increased blood circulation to the scalp. Beautifying Serum helps create the ideal environment for strong, healthy hair growth.

So I am not able to review this product myself..JUST YET, although you can betcha that I will be bringing it home with me tomorrow and testing it for the month. Then I will pass it on to another one of the Bijou girls and have her review it to! The thing that I am most interested in is the scalp and skin benefits! Because let me tell you, I am having serious issues with my scalp, the cold and dry Skaneateles weather is doing a job on me:)

Stay tuned for a proper review, until then, stop into Bijou and buy some for yourself, you know that as always any product that you do not like, you can bring it back, we stand behind out products 100%.

In salon color class..what we learn!

    My

What we learned from Jaime who is the master color educator for Lanza Healing color, (omg, they have a blog!!) was a really awesome ribboning technique done with foils, we learned 40+ new shade formula's, with names such as sandstone, teak, Cheyenne, mocha and so many more! We are all so excited to start using these colors, our hands are just itching! We always learn so much when she comes in!
On Sunday evening, we have another educator coming in from Eufora, their cuts always impress me and I can't wait to see what they have in store for us this time! It's hands on, so we'll have manikins to work on, fun fun fun!!

    The Bijou star!!

Check out our little Bijou star. Lori's little girl came to our photo shoot and Laure Lillie could not resist snapping a few photos and Dolly had no problem posing!! This little girl melts hearts..can't you tell!? Laure Lillie captures the essence of children, if there is one thing you do when your kids are small, get their photos taken by Laure, she's the best!!

Haircolor by Stacy O'neal at Bijou!

And she drove from Ithaca to get her hair done!

Here is a client who drove all the way from Ithaca!

She has naturally curly hair, wearing it natural or straightened sometimes. There was a lot of discombobulation from her previous cut (hence the reason for driving all the way out here:) and her goal is to get all these crazy layers grown out. Our goal with the color was to bring it close to her natural level with some natural blonde highlights, so that this busy mom didn't have to rush right back when her roots started showing. (It's very hard with the lighting and camera to see the actual before color, it was a very ashy dark blonde with very very pale outgrown highlights, the end result was a warmer base, because warmth reflects more light than an ashy color and golden highlights, my client had flecks of gold in her eyes, so it was stunning!)

The greatest thing about this whole appointment was that she found us by our website and then after looking at our pictures, she made an appointment and was super happy when she left! It was also fun, because they made a family trip out of it, and while she was sitting there I told her all the fun things that her husband and two kids could do while she was getting done, (Creekside bookstore, the community center, Johnny angels or the bakery for lunch) so she called them on the cell phone and they headed straight to the creekside! I love sharing Skaneateles with people from out of town, there are so many great things to do!

    Great news!

2010 so far has been terrific. After a whole ten days, I can say that so far, so good!

Salon today is a trade magazine that I read religiously every month. The first year after I opened, all proud of the design of Bijou, (the original first phase of Bijou) after being open for 3 months, I entered the glorious and prestigious salon of the year! Shelly and I came in to the salon on a Sunday and did a real photo shoot. By real I mean, man I never realized when these salons do photo shoots and the salon looks pristine and perfect...All the stuff was in the hallway hiding. I thought I had blogged about it, but I guess not. (must have blogged in my head, like so many things) We took some great photos, I filled out the application and then received a letter saying although it was very nice, we didn't make the cut. I was sad, but only for a moment, because even without it being in a magazine, I knew Bijou was special! So I thought that was it, my only chance!

So right now, I need to get my pen moving, stop clicking on the keyboard and start answering all these questions for both competitions. Wish me luck!

    BUT THEN...

When my new Salon today magazine came, I read 'Hey good lookin' show us your style', I read the first sentence...'Did you give your salon or spa a makeover this year?'...I almost forgot...YES I DID GIVE BIJOU A MAKEOVER! I mean an expansion is a makeover right...I remember the dust, the construction...the dust...did I mention the dust? I quickly scanned down and read to see if I actually did qualify...I DO I DO I DO!! The deadline is February 1st, 2010 and I'm on it.

The other exciting news is that Salon Today (what a great magazine for our trade) also has another competition..and OMG, I just went into my other tab to make sure I have the info right and I screeched...IT'S THE 13TH ANNUAL SALON TODAY 200 FASTEST GROWING SALONS!!!...(I'm a bit supersticious, so bear with me) 13 is my lucky number! From birth it was chosen for me, I have a charm bracelet that has the number 13 on me, when I was choosing my Bijou email, plain Bijou was not available for my yahoo account, so the first alternative they offered me was Bijousalon1300...I took it, seeing it as a sign, that same day when I called the phone company for my phone number, they offered me 685-1300...let's see what else, Oh I used to say that we were actually 6 and a half Jordan Road, because Bella Blue was also 6 Jordan and yet were only half of the retail space , so when I took over their space, the first thing I thought was...cool, I wish I could rename the address, to 13 Jordan:) (I'm probably boring you with this nonsense, so I will move on:) BUT seriously, 13 is my lucky number, our numbers for growth in the year 2009 are impressive and I am eligible to enter! How amazing is that?!

Plus not to mention, Bijou was already in Nails magazine, and I'm hoping for another feature in another great magazine, or two!

Comments I had missed from our Bijou website, but have no worries, I won't miss them ever again!

Just the other day I had a horrible revelation...I had an entire email address that was linked my webpage comment section that I was not aware of. It was linked to the part where it says leave us a comment on our webpage. Thanks God I found it...even though some comments and questions were from 2007! I went back and tried to answer all 150+ emails, if I didn't get back to you, please forgive me and leave another comment, now that I am aware of the address I am right on top of it:)

I happened upon it, because I have Lori's husband who owns a company called Codemunkey's that does website designs. So he is going to make our new website really cool! AND we will be adding a feature that can let you book your appointment online, how great is that!?!?! This would be a great option for me, because I cannot tell you how many times I think about making an appointment for myself, whether it be a car appt, a dentist appt, a pet appt...you name it, but when I have time to think about it...they are closed! So I end up waiting for so long! I really hope it works and is worthwhile..I will give it a couple of months to see how well we like it! Exciting things in Twenty Ten!!

So here are some of the lovely comments from clients, Thank you for leaving us one, feedback helps us so much!

I just wanted to tell you guys how much I enjoyed my experience at your salon last week. I really loved the vibrant personality of your staff and found everyone to be just so kind and welcoming. I felt as though I was among friends at your salon.
I especially loved my haircut and even how my eyebrow waxing turned out (Thank you, Linda)! To me a great haircut is not how it looks when you leave the salon, but how it looks after you attempt to style it on your own the next day. I have received a ton of compliments on my new style and I make sure to tell everyone where to go for their next haircut. It was a long drive for me to visit your salon, but it was well worth it. See you again soon! Thank you! Cayla Yakey

Hello Ms. Baker, Your website is beautiful...I have the same color scheme!!! I live in Chicago and am in the process of opening my own little nail spa. I am curious...what salon software, credit card merchant do you utilize for your company? I am gathering information as to which software would benefit me the most. Thank you, Demetria Dobbins

Looking forward to seeing the renovations. Hayley & I are officially addicted to your salon - however, last Sunday the bath bombs were missing because of the new sink so I'll have to stock up when I see sam in April! Take care Margaret Ireland ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Happy New Year Kim!
Thanks for getting back to me. I really have enjoyed my cut. It is definitely on par with the Deva cuts I received in their salons and I had a great experience at Bijou. I'm at a point now where the bangs are getting too long and the sides too heavy. I'll call to make an appointment here soon. :)

I looked at your entire blog. It's beautiful! And it was fun to find Mimi in it too. Have a great Sunday! Elisabeth

An Aveda product review from yours truly!

Well it's full blown winter here in Skaneateles! Probably the worst we have seen in quite a while..although like childbirth, I tend to forget what winter was like the year before! BUT this winter just may stick with me for quite sometime...I must be getting older, or maybe I need to take it easy on the highlights, but lately my hair has been making Rasta's in the back, and it is generally dry and crackly. What does that mean? It means I need to pull out the big guns!! So I took a stroll all around the shop, it was actually quite fun, I got to pretend I was a customer and wanting to buy some products...I even asked one of the Bijou girls if they could help me;) Based on what the handy little Aveda magnets said, I decided to forge ahead with promise of this:

Drenches even the driest, most brittle hair with moisture, leaving it soft, supple, touchable.

    • instantly improves dry hair up to 63%, when used as part of our Dry RemedyTM Moisturizing System
    • patent-pending Deep-Moisture complex penetrates hair to deliver lasting, intense moisture, powered by buriti oil, pomegranate and palm-derived conditioners
    • relaxing floral aroma blend with certified organic palmarosa, ylang ylang and rose geranium, plus a hint of vanilla!
So here I am a week and a half later, and my hair is totally reformed! I am doing the full regime, the shampoo, conditioner and the masque! My hair is soft and feeling all better, no more Rasta's as Thomas has been feeling my hair and pointing out ;)

What you have to remember with buying professional shampoo's is, that you don't have to use as much, for the shampoo, literally I have been using a dime or pearl size amount. The shampoo is very thick and I have found that it works best if you actually drench your hair before you shampoo...the more water you have in your hair the better it spreads! It's funny, people always will walk out saying..."It looks great, but when I do it myself, it just looks okay." The absolute truth to this is that we are using professional products from start to finish, it really makes a difference!

Let me know in our comment box if you'd like us to try a product and review it for you:) We are happy to give you our professional opinion!
